Your soul Awakened to these memories after spotting Thaos activating the Engwithan machine at Cilant Lis, and the Awakened soul became hellbent on tracking Thaos down for a clear answer to the question of whether or not the gods are 'really' real. The PC's past self was initially a missionary for the Inquisition, went over to Iovara's side as a double agent, and later grew disillusioned with the Inquisition him/herself after learning of the true nature of the gods - that they were created by Thaos, instead of being creator gods - and confronted Thaos about it, which is implied to have led to their death. Thaos ultimately won and that's why the Engwithan gods are universally worshiped in the present day, while all traces of Iovara and her teachings have been completely erased. However, in the end she was betrayed by the past-Watcher (again, you can choose your reason for selling her out in dialogue) and tortured to death. She led the resistance movement against Thaos (the game's main villain) and his Inquisition, which sought to impose belief in the Engwithan pantheon all over the world and was the precursor to the Leaden Key. Iovara was the past-Watcher's lover, mentor, friend or some combination of the three I think you get to establish the nature of your past self's relationship with her in dialogue. Creitum was one of the cities of old Engwith (it no longer exists and its ruins are nowhere to be found in-game) and possibly the past-Watcher's hometown. The main character's flashbacks were to one of his/her past lives from 2000 years ago, when s/he was a citizen of the ancient Engwithan civilization whose ruins you've been exploring from time to time.
